Overview
ASME BPVC Section VIII, Division 1 establishes rules for the design and construction of pressure vessels. It is intended for designers, manufacturers, inspectors, users, and authorities responsible for pressure-retaining equipment.
The code coordinates materials, design-by-rule, fabrication, examination, pressure testing, certification, and overpressure protection into one construction framework.

General Requirements (Part UG)

Materials (Part UCS, UHA, etc.)
- Use materials permitted by Section VIII with properties and allowable stresses coordinated through BPVC Section II.

- Evaluate shells, heads, flat covers, openings, reinforcement, external-pressure stability, flanges, supports, and pressure relief as applicable.
- Requirements for welded vessels (Part UW) stipulate joint categories, weld types, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), and radiographic examination rules.
Fabrication & Erection
- Qualify welding procedures (WPS) and personnel (WPQ) under BPVC Section IX and apply the applicable forming, tolerance, PWHT, and workmanship rules.
Examination, Inspection & Testing
- Apply the specified visual and nondestructive examinations (RT, UT, MT, PT), with methods coordinated through BPVC Section V and acceptance criteria from Section VIII.
- Complete the required pressure test (typically hydrostatic at 1.3x MAWP or pneumatic at 1.1x MAWP).
Certification & Stamping
- Requires Authorized Inspector (AI) involvement, submission of Manufacturer’s Data Report (U-1 / U-1A forms), and application of the U-stamp when Code certification is specified.
Operation & Maintenance
- Section VIII is a construction code; manage the vessel in service under the owner’s integrity program, adopted inspection code (e.g., API 510, NBIC), and jurisdictional requirements.

Rules address internal-pressure sizing, external-pressure buckling, formed and flat heads, opening reinforcement, joint efficiency, MAWP, bolted flanges, and pressure testing.

- The project-adopted edition controls. A jurisdiction or contract may still require the 2023 edition even though ASME lists 2025 as current.
- Division 1 is primarily rules-based; do not treat it as a substitute for Division 2 design-by-analysis where fatigue, complex stress, or project requirements call for that approach.
- An ASME Certification Mark is tied to an authorized manufacturer, quality program, Authorized Inspection Agency involvement, and completed data reports—not design calculations alone.
