Introduction

ASME B31.3 is the industry standard for process piping design. One of the most fundamental calculations is determining the minimum required pipe wall thickness.

The Formula

The pressure design thickness is calculated using:

t = (P × D) / [2 × (S × E × W + P × Y)]

Where:

  • P = Internal design gauge pressure (MPa)
  • D = Outside diameter (mm)
  • S = Allowable stress from Table A-1M (MPa)
  • E = Quality factor (weld joint)
  • W = Weld strength reduction factor
  • Y = Coefficient from Table 304.1.1

Adding Corrosion Allowance

The minimum required thickness includes corrosion allowance:

tm = t + c

Mill Tolerance

When specifying pipe, account for manufacturing tolerance:

t_nom = tm / (1 - mill_tolerance%)

For standard carbon steel pipe, mill tolerance is typically 12.5%.
